Blanton Museum Brings California Cool to Austin

b_o_cMany of Austin transplants from out-of-state that I’ve been encountering on the Downtown scene are from California, not surprisingly. Perhaps the Blanton Museum caught wind of this trend and decided to welcome the newcomers by paying homage to their home state. Until May 17, 2009 the Blanton Museum of Art will be presenting Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design, and Culture at the Midcentury. The exhibition features various elements of painting, architecture, furniture design, decorative and graphic arts, film, and music that launched mid–century modernism in the United States and established Los Angeles as a major American cultural center. It was inspired in part by “the formal parallels between modernist architecture and the West Coast hard–edge paintings of the 1950s.”

Going on a natural diet does not mean that you should deprive yourself of flavor. These days its becoming more a common occurence for us and our children to become dairy or gluten intolerant. Here is recipe for sweet treat that is gluten free, egg free and dairy free by Alana Sugar of Whole Foods.
Frosted Spiced Cupcakes

For the Cupcakes
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk or other non-dairy milk
1 (6-ounce) container plain coconut milk yogurt
3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon egg replacer, such as Ener-G, mixed with 1/4 cup warm water
2 cups white rice flour
1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus more for sprinkling
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

For the Frosting
1/4 cup vegan margarine, softened
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 to 2 tablespoons unsweetened almond milk or other non-dairy milk
1/4 teaspoon gluten-free vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350°F. For the cupcakes, whisk together oil, almond milk, yogurt, sugar and egg replacer-water mixture in a large bowl. In a separate large bowl, mix together rice flour, xanthan gum, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Add flour mixture to milk mixture and stir to combine. Spoon batter into 16 paper-lined standard muffin tins, filling each about two-thirds full. Bake until cooked through and light golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer cupcakes to a wire rack and set aside to let cool completely.

For the frosting, put margarine, sugar, almond milk and vanilla in a large bowl and beat with an electric mixer until well combined and fluffy, about 1 minute. Spread frosting on cupcakes, sprinkle cinnamon over the top and serve.

Art Austin Celebrates Love

18ad49cc07d0914a34vmq1d390deArt Week Austin is known for building a platform for local artists and an opportunity for various organizations that promote creativity by producing city-wide art events. It also allows the community to immerse itself in various disciplines including art, architecture, design, and performance. The week will be marked with a number of events taking place downtown beginning on April 22 and ending on the 26th.

A cool event taking place during the week “Pink Unplugged”. All day on April 25th visitors are encouraged to visit this factory of love located on the banks of Lady Bird Lake, where they can type a love letter to significant loved one. The letters are then bottled up by the Pink factory workers and personally delivered to its destination. Created by Jaclyn Pryor, this event illustrates an “invisible web of interconnectivity created between senders and receivers”. It also allows residents to plunge themselves into art-making by providing them with an opportunity to express their creativity and love for each other.

Juice It Up

sysheadJuicing has become a staple in my diet routine lately. There is is something about my apple, kale, cucumber, lime and kiwi blend that sends me soaring. However pressed for time I always don’t have time to juice my own produce, and too often I find myself going to the grocery store. So I was instantly in heaven when I discovered Austin’s own juice bar, Daily Juice. With two locations in Austin, the Daily Juice served an array of blended goodness with cooky names like Girls on Film or the Subliminator. They also serve tasty vegan-friendly dishes like Living Food Tacos and BBQ Coconut Sandwiches.

My Fair Lady

images2I absolutely love fruits, but I’ve never really cared for apples. That is until I discovered Pink Lady® Apples. Once I  sampled them at Central Market was absolutely hooked. This tart, tangy and sweet apple has a refreshingly crisp crunch and is pleasing to the palate. A unique feature about this particular of apple is its ability to retain its freshness and resist browning for longer periods of time. Consider this fruit a designer apple if you would –completely licensed and branded like any other designer good and pricer than your average red delicious apple. But if your on a budget and all about saving those extra few pennies at the register, you’re in luck because they are currently on sale at Central Market for .99cents/lb this week. Central Market is also currently running specials on strawberries, Snoqualmie Wines, and  other goodies this week.
